Voices from Our Circle

13 Years & Still Rising

Native Voices Rising is a Native-led fund where Native people decide where pooled philanthropic dollars flow.

Our work is documented in two landmark reports: the research that called us into being and the decade of proof that followed. Both are grounded in the voices of the people who know this work best: grantee partners, community reviewers, and funders in relationship with us.

Native Voices Rising: A Case for Funding Native-led Change (2013)

The research that started it all. Led by Louis T. Delgado (Oneida), this foundational study documented what Native communities have always known: that Native organizations carry enormous responsibility for their communities, lands, and rights, with strikingly little support from American philanthropy. Its findings and recommendations remain a guide for any funder ready to support Native-led change.

10 Year Impact Report (2023)

A decade in, we asked our community what NVR has meant to them. This report carries their answers. Told through the voices of grantee partners, reviewers, and funders, it shows how participatory, trust-based grantmaking moves real resources to real organizing, and it names what philanthropy must still do to be in right relationship with Native communities. The recommendations inside are an open invitation to the philanthropic field.

Part of the National Evidence Base

Native Voices Rising was the only Native-led fund among the 22 collaborative funds studied in The Collaborative Effect: Grantee Perspectives on How Collaborative Funds Work Best (2026), the most comprehensive research to date on how collaborative funds serve the organizations they exist to support. Led by ViaNova, Redstone Strategy Group, and Philanthropy Together, with support from the Hewlett Foundation, the study drew on more than 640 grantee voices to identify what makes collaborative funds build trust, shift power, and deliver impact beyond their size.

We were honored to bring Native-led participatory grantmaking into that national evidence base, and to have our grantee partners’ experiences counted among the voices shaping how philanthropy understands this work.
